Close shaves & tough competition in cycle 2

Main Image

Cycle 2 of the Jupiter Premier league saw strong competition in the lower divisions, while the usual suspects finished strong in divisions 1 & 2. Henry Birch and Janick Radford took the top spots in division one, with Martin Watts finishing a close third. Birch managed to win all of his matches convincingly 3-0 or 3-1, however missed out on a usually close battle between him and Watts, who suffered with illness towards the end of the cycle.

The most contested division had to be the fourth, with Graham Ray, Igor Pirnau and Nick Maunder all finishing on 19 points & all winning one match against the other. With Nick giving away the most games the deciding match for promotion was Graham vs Igor. Igor won this clash 3-0 earning himself a place in division 3 for the first time. Chris de Putron, despite virtually all of his matches being tight, won every game and will start the new year with a challenge!

Leagues 5 and 6 also proved to be close, with 3 players in league 6 also finishing on equal points, vowing for 1st and 2nd place. Tom Weatherburn and Paul Sutton gave away the least games this cycle earning themselves promotion; this is testament to the hard work both have put in from the offset this season & It’s great to see the fruits of their labour paying merits! Adam Thoumine made it a double promotion, going from league 6 to 5 and will be starting in league 4 in January – a tricky player taking elements from his Badminton experience, it’s no wonder some of Guernsey’s established players have found playing Adam a challenge.

With the Ogier Senior Island Championships, Masters & Junior events running in January, lets hope the success for players this cycle is carried across into weekends of tough competition!
