Guernsey has been accepted for the first time as a member of the European Squash Federation (ESF).
The application to join, made by Guernsey Squash & Racketball Association, was unanimously approved by the other member states at the European Squash AGM held earlier this month.
Membership of the ESF means that Guernsey can now enter a Men’s and Women’s team into division three of next year’s European Team Championships which takes place from 19 – 22 April next year.
Martin Watts, Guernsey Squash Development Officer said: “Because the game has once again missed out in the next Natwest Island Games and with the challenges of qualifying for the Commonwealth Games, the European Team Championships will be an ideal opportunity to provide a strong level of competition for our island’s top players.
“This is an amazing opportunity for Guernsey squash players to compete at an international level.
“The Island Games is a fantastic event but squash’s participation is sporadic and our top players need a high level of competition to continue to improve and develop. It is also hoped that Guernsey’s participation will help inspire the many up and coming juniors that we have playing.”
Selection criteria will soon be available on our website for any players looking to make the teams.
